Former professional footballer, entrepreneur, broadcaster and business leader Gary Neville recently joined BofA Global Research's Martyn Briggs for a special episode of Global Research Unlocked™, a podcast from BofA Global Research. The conversation builds on The Beautiful Game: BofA's World Cup 2026 Guide, which examined what the FIFA World Cup 2026™ meant for the global economy, digital infrastructure and data use.

Leadership lessons beyond the pitch

Drawing on his experiences at Manchester United, in business and as a club owner, Neville reflected on the importance of culture, accountability and communication. He emphasized that organizations succeed when leaders create the right environment and bring together people who share common standards and values. As he noted, “The best players don't always make the best team.”

The discussion also covered adapting to change, building winning cultures and developing talent. Neville highlighted the importance of surrounding people with strong mentors and teammates, adding that “if you don't have the right people around you, you're finished.”

Beyond leadership, the conversation explored the evolving business of football, the rise of creator-led media, the growing role of data and artificial intelligence (AI) in decision-making, and how organizations can balance technology with human judgment. Through it all, Neville returned to a common theme: the value of authenticity, trust and strong relationships in building lasting success.
